Equal Opportunity Poster

The Florida Equal Opportunity Law prohibits discrimination in employment based on certain protected characteristics. The law covers employers with 15 or more employees and applies to all aspects of employment, including hiring, firing, promotions, and compensation.

Under the law, it is illegal for employers to discriminate against employees or job applicants based on their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status. Employers are also prohibited from retaliating against employees who complain about discriminatory practices or who participate in investigations related to discrimination claims.

If an employee or job applicant believes they have been discriminated against, they may file a complaint with the Florida Commission on Human Relations (FCHR) within 365 days of the alleged discrimination. The FCHR will investigate the claim and may attempt to resolve the issue through mediation. If mediation is not successful, the FCHR may file a lawsuit on behalf of the complainant.

In addition to the Florida Equal Opportunity Law, there are also federal laws that prohibit employment discrimination, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Employers in Florida must comply with both state and federal anti-discrimination laws.
